Turkey... Almost done
Together with North American colleagues, Quantomics scientists have developed a cost-effective method to determine and characterise the exact sequence of the genome (i.e. the entire genetic make-up) of the domestic turkey, effectively opening up the “book of life” for this species. A lot of useful data has sprung up from this exercise, which will help identify specific genes that monitor the birds’ inherent resistance to diseases along with other important characteristics such as fertility, robustness and product quality. Judicious use of this information will lead to an improvement in the birds’ health, welfare and productivity. The same results are also being used in comparative studies with other bird and mammalian species, contributing to a better understanding of evolution. Last, but not least, the technology developed here can be used as a model for further applications to more species with agricultural, ecological and evolutionary interest.
